How to get to Ilopango Lake?
If
you are coming to San Salvador, you have to take the panamerican
highway, and go to Ilopango; few minutes after the Salvadoran Air Force,
you must have to take the tour at the lake.
Ilopango
lake or in spanish Lago de Ilopango is between the Departments of
Cuscutlán, La Paz and San Salvador just 21 km from the capital. It is
one of the few lakes in the world that hides a volcano beneath its
waters, making it an ideal spot for diving enthusiasts. Its waters are
at a constant 26ºC, which makes it perfect for year-round diving.
In 1880 the water level rose, a natural channel (Río Jiboa) was formed on the eastern side, and the resultant drainage left a volcanic island in the centre of the lake.
In 1928 the water again rose, destroying houses along the shoreline. The lake has since become a popular tourist resort, with activity centred on the towns of Asino and Ilopango on the western shore.
